More and more of you are growing and producing your own fruits and vegetables from the garden. In search of a healthier diet, to save money or simply for the pleasure of collecting their own crops, the French invest the garden.

Garden greenhouses and tunnel greenhouses previously reserved for agricultural professionals grow everywhere in private gardens. Whether in PVC, glass or transparent plastic sheeting, greenhouses come in all shapes, sizes and above all at all prices.

Specialist garden centre stores now offer kits ready to mount tunnel greenhouses. The prices are accessible, and in a few steps you mount yourself a standard garden greenhouse. Admittedly, the duration is often limited, but this type of product has the merit of offering a «test» period during which you validate or not the use of the greenhouse according to your needs.

Afterwards, you can invest in a higher-end model, or build your own garden greenhouse. Garden greenhouses are considered as «outdoor annexes», in the same way as pergolas for example, for which the installation can be subject to certain prior administrative procedures. Let’s see together which ones.

What are the regulations for garden tunnel greenhouses?

Depending on the dimensions of your future garden greenhouse, you may be required to file a file with the town hall of your municipality of residence. Indeed, some structures require a prior declaration or even an application for a building permit.

  • If the garden greenhouse is intended exclusively for private agricultural or horticultural production and does not exceed 1.80 metres in height, it is exempt from any prior declaration.

You can safely mount your garden greenhouse kit or build a tunnel greenhouse yourself.

  • If the future greenhouse is more than 1.80 meters high but less than 4 meters high and the area is less than or equal to 2000 m², a simple declaration in town hall is enough. However, check with your town hall because some municipalities have specific procedures in place.

  • Finally, if the greenhouse measures more than 4 meters in height and/ or it occupies an area greater than 2000 m², you must obtain a building permit from your town hall.
