Read one of our users' assembly tips for your pergola: I had a unique, personalized pergola in mind. I chose wood for my pergola: a beautiful raw wood for a clean, simple yet modern pergola.

First step: purchasing safety materials and equipment

Because before embarking on such an undertaking, it's best to be well equipped: a pair of thick gloves, protective goggles and shoes, and comfortable clothing. A quick look at the weather forecast: the weekend looked to be cool but fine, and above all without rain or wind.

That very morning, I gathered my materials: knowing that I'm installing a lean-to pergola, i.e. one set against the facade of the house, placed above the terrace, I naturally took a few measurements beforehand: the height available and required, the length and width of the future pergola structure.

Setting up the pergola

Assembly begins with the location of the vertical beams, the main support for the entire pergola. I deliberately chose solid wood beams, wide and strong enough to support the weight of the structure and stand the test of time.

Another piece of information: I chose to install a pergola slightly wider than the terrace so as to perfectly cover this future aperitif/barbecue/sitting area!

So, if you've been following my story, the markers for the vertical beams are slightly outside the terrace.

Holes about 70cm deep are then dug, into which the vertical beams are placed. Of course, all the beams have to be buried at the same depth, so Simon, the clever one in the gang, drew level lines on the beams, each at the same height.

With the posts in place, the holes were filled with rubble and concrete. Here again, Simon offered to use a level to check the verticality of the beams and their alignment with each other... It's a good thing I'd recruited him!

After the drying period, it's time to install the roof: using special concrete dowels and screws, screw your roof beams horizontally to the facade, opposite and perpendicular to the vertical beams. Repeat the operation as many times as there are horizontal wooden beams (frame + crossbeams).

Installing the roof covering

The last step is to install the roof covering! To be honest, as Martine would say, it's up to you to decide how you'd like to decorate your home: canisse, climbing plants, wooden slats, etc. I went for the practical side and opted for a white tarpaulin cover, which is both waterproof and aesthetically pleasing.

Frankly, it's a real eye-catcher!

To avoid having to chase after my tarpaulin that had flown into the neighbor's garden, I firmly attached the pergola cover to the structure, using the metal eyelets to install the rope.

In just one weekend, the pergola was up and running: all that's left is to clean the barbecue! Any volunteers?
